When polishing floorboards there are a range of products available, each resulting in a different kind of finish. Our coating range includes:

• Solvent-based polyurethane (Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Satin, Matt and Low-Sheen)

• Water based coatings (Gloss, Semi-Gloss, Satin and Matt)

• Oil based finish (Tung Oil)

Solvent-based polyurethane coatings are the most commonly used interior timber floor coatings in Australia today. They offer superior resistance to day-to-day wear and tear and provide a low maintenance finish. Solvent-based polyurethane coatings give a full-bodied look to the finish. Lighter boards can yellow and the floors are usually darker than those coated with water based coatings. However, the appearance of a beautifully finished solvent-based polyurethane gloss or high gloss floor is unrivalled.

In years gone by, water based coatings have been regarded as inferior or lacklustre alternatives to traditional solvent-based products. However, due to improvements in technology, water based coatings are gaining in popularity because they offer a superb natural look, are non-yellowing, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and have excellent resistance to scuffing and scratching. Unlike solvent-based polyurethane coatings, water based coatings do not leave an unpleasant odour during the drying process. However, the gloss level in water based coatings is much more subdued compared to solvent based alternatives.

Oil based coatings encompass a wide variety of coating styles. However, in general, the majority of oil based coatings fit into the Tung Oil coating or the Oil Modified Urethane coating categories. Oil based coating generally offers a very pleasing aesthetic appearance, however, they require more maintenance than their water or solvent-based counterparts. Regular maintenance using metallised polishes or spirit based waxes often means that oil based coatings are likely to be used more in commercial applications than domestic.
